We Started MKD Recruit Because Drivers Deserved Better
There’s a reason drivers across East Anglia keep coming back to MKD Recruit and it’s got nothing to do with algorithms, automated systems, or slick sales patter. It’s because we actually know what we’re doing, we pick up the phone and we treat people like people.
That’s been the foundation of this business since Mike Johnson founded MKD Recruit in March, Cambridgeshire in 2014. And ten years in, it still is.
Our Story
Mike spent over a decade working in high-street multi-branch recruitment agencies before he decided enough was enough. He’d watched drivers get lost in the system reduced to a payroll number, passed between consultants who didn’t know their Class 1 from their Class 2, dealt with by people who’d never sat behind the wheel of anything heavier than a hatchback.
So he built something different.
MKD Recruit was founded on a single principle: that personal service, genuine expertise, and honest communication will always outperform scale and automation. Not as a slogan. As a way of actually running the business, every single day.
We started small, local, and focused and that’s exactly what we’ve stayed. Our base is March, Cambridgeshire. Our patch is East Anglia. Our specialisation is HGV drivers, and only HGV drivers, from 7.5 tonne through to Class 1, including ADR, HIAB, Moffett, and abnormal loads.
We don’t dilute our product. We never have.
What We Do
We supply HGV drivers to transport and logistics businesses across a 30-mile radius of March covering Peterborough, Wisbech, Kings Lynn, Ely, Cambridge and the surrounding areas.
Whether an employer needs emergency cover for tomorrow morning, a rolling temporary arrangement or a permanent hire to strengthen their fleet operation, we handle it. And we handle it with the same attention to detail whether it’s a one-day booking or a long-term contract.
For drivers, we work across the full range of licence categories and shift patterns. Day work, nights, tramping, odd days, full-time permanent roles, if it involves an HGV and it’s in our patch, we want to know about it.
Every driver we register goes through a thorough compliance process. Licence checks, CPC verification, right-to-work documentation, references. Employers don’t have time for shortcuts and neither do we.

The Team
Our consultants bring over 50 years of combined driver recruitment experience to the table. Several of them hold HGV licences themselves which means when a driver calls us, they’re talking to someone who genuinely understands the job.
Mike remains hands-on in the business today. He knows the clients. He knows the drivers. And he’s still the person who picks up the phone.
